5 Easy and Effective Ways to Optimize Your Mac’s Performance

Macintosh computers are already some of the most powerful machines on the market. However, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have to maintain or upkeep your Mac to make sure that it is always running efficiently. Plus, as open source platforms and networks become more available, there are many applications and programs that can make your Mac even more powerful and lightning fast. So, no matter if you have an older Mac or a newer high definition model, there are plenty of ways to make your system run more productively. Here are five easy and effective ways to optimize your Mac’s performance.

  1. Erase files that you don’t need. Indeed, having a bunch of excess files will only slow down your Mac. So, when you don’t need a file anymore, make sure to dump it in the trash file. This will effectively loosen the load on the computer and allow your RAM to work at its fullest capacity. Make sure, though, that you empty your trash on a regular basis as that’s also another way to keep your Mac running efficiently.
  2. Clean up your desktop. It is also important that you clean up your desktop regularly as well. On a Mac, most files downloaded off the Internet or pulled off a browser window are placed on the desktop. If you don’t take the time to either move these items or place them in the trash, you could wind up with an excess amount of files which will eventually  start to drag down your processes. So, at the end of a workday, be sure to drag files into their prospective folders. If you don’t need certain items, just throw them out.
  3. Always update your computer. It is also critical that you update your computer on a regular basis. Many computers run on operating systems that are always being updated. If you are working on an older operating platform, it could be causing your system to slow down. Not only that, but it could be causing your system to become vulnerable to cyber attacks. So, make sure to always hit ‘yes’ when your computer asks you to download the newest version of a certain software or program platform.
  4. Scan and make software repairs when necessary. At one time or another, your Mac’s software will start to show signs of wear and tear. Programs can become corrupted – either from digital bugs or from malware. So, you want to scan for all these issues and then make the necessary repairs. If you want an easier way to complete this function, simply use an open source freeware platform called Onyx Mac that will scan and repair for you.
  5. Make sure to keep particularly heavy files off the main scratch disk. Your main scratch disc is basically what your computer’s default hard drive. However, you don’t want to keep everything on this scratch disc – you want to keep the heavy files on a remote hard drive or in the cloud. If your scratch disk becomes too full, it could slow down your entire computer. In the end, the lighter the load you put on your Mac, the faster it will operate.
